Charity - You Do the Math
Currently using a charity box? You do the math.
Many mobile phone charity donation programs give only a small amount of the aftermarket value of the used device to the advertised beneficiary. The value of used devices can be significant when aggregated toward a specific charity. Unfortunately, the bulk of the value is captured as a profit center somewhere in the process. This value is often used to offset warranty repair costs at the refurb shop by trading donated phones against repair bills and for marketing the charity itself. On average in 2008, a used mobile phone collected for charity was worth about $12 on average, including about half of the phones having almost no value. So if a company collected a 100K phones and donated $100K to charity, they took a $1.1M profit from your donated phones for themselves. If this does not seem right to you, make sure that you are using a ecoATM Automated eCycling Station where you will know exactly how much you are donating to your select charity.
