Eco-Friendly Ideas for Staying in This Memorial Day Weekend

American women and men put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect the land they love. While many celebrate Memorial Day as no more than a day off from work or school, it is a day to reflect and commemorate the passing of brave service members.

We enjoy our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness because of these fallen heroes. We can honor their memory by enjoying our freedom ethically and responsibly. Our lives would be drastically different without the freedom they fought for.

While celebrating with your family or commemorating the life of a lost service member, think about how you could observe the holiday in a way that respects these service members and the land they died protecting.

Keep the Picnic, Toss the Trash

As the holiday unofficially marks the beginning of summer, many families head outside to eat in the sunshine. You don't need to go far to enjoy a meal in the sun. Heading to your backyard instead of a local park gives you the same appreciation for the beauty of the earth and the taste of your food.

Picnics remain a staple of many Memorial Day traditions, but they can take a toll on the environment if not planned responsibly. When people choose disposable utensils and plates, picnics negatively impact the environment they're out enjoying. To have a more sustainable Memorial Day weekend, pack reusable dishes and utensils.

Also, try to prepare the right amount of food. If people make too much food, the leftovers go to waste. Food waste accounts for 30 to 40% of the American food supply, and this number grows during holidays when people are prone to make extra food. The resources used to produce, process, transport, prepare, store and dispose of the food are wasted when the food goes unused.

If you have a local farmer's market in your community, start cultivating a greater appreciation of food by shopping there. The less food needs to travel to get to your table, the less carbon footprint it adds to the environment. Bonus points if it's organic!

With those ingredients, make only enough food for those in attendance. Enjoy with the people closest to you, and savor the day, the food and the company.

Enhance the Green Spaces in and Around Your Home

You don't need to venture out into public spaces to appreciate the earth. Even if you're stuck in an apartment, you still have opportunities to get in touch with the earth from inside.

If you have a backyard, here are some great opportunities to make your backyard even greener:

  •  Set up a bird feeder or house.
  •  Plant a garden.
  •  Let the grass grow longer before cutting it.

If you wish to help the earth from indoors, here are some options to get you started.
  •  Start a terrarium. Terrariums are a fun, inexpensive way to add some color to your home. You can start this self-contained environment inside a glass bowl you thrifted or have laying around your home. Start by lining the bottom with pebbles, bark or seashells to give the dirt somewhere to drain excess water, then use, light, airy soil. Now it's time to get creative! Use any combination of plants and thrifted figurines to decorate.
  •  Begin composting. You can find an expensive composter online, but they're simple enough to make on your own. Use a large plastic or ceramic container, poking holes in the top and the bottom for ventilation. Add a tray underneath for drainage. Prep the container with layered strips of newspaper and use one pound of worms for every square foot of container. Place used paper towels, eggshells, fruits, vegetables, tea bags, coffee and natural coffee filters. Do not use oils, fats, plastic, citrus or any animal products. Use the soil for planting.
  •  Give life to old fruits and veggies. Use the remains of your fruits and vegetables to grow your own inside. For example, if garlic or an onion begins to sprout before you get the chance to use it, plant the sprouts in soil and follow directions on where to keep the pot and how when to harvest. Now you've saved yourself a trip to the grocery store and sustainably used food that would have ended up in the trash.

Staycation Sustainably

While the three day weekend presents an excellent opportunity to travel, unconscious vacationing habits put a strain on the environment. Follow these tips to stay closer to home and appreciate the beauty around you.

  • Appreciate green spaces near you. The closer you stay to home, the less carbon footprint you produce. Take this time to "be a tourist" in your hometown. There may be plenty of green spaces around you that you've never taken the time to experience before. You can enjoy a bike ride on a rail trail or hike a local path.
  •  Stay in awe of the earth from the city. Not everyone has the opportunity to visit local green spaces, especially if you live in an urban area. You can still appreciate nature by watching a sunset, going stargazing, taking a walk during your lunch or planting some flowers inside.
  • When shopping, avoid fast fashion. Nowadays, it's easy to shop from the comfort of your couch. Make the most of those irresistible Memorial Day sales by supporting businesses that sell products made sustainably. Afterward, donate whatever object you're replacing. Fast fashion may mean you can buy more for less, but millions of tons of textile waste accumulate in landfills as a result. Even if the methods used to produce an item weren't sustainable, the longer you keep it, the less impact it has on the earth. Buy quality over quantity and choose pieces that will last for years. You save the environment and your wallet in the long run.
