What is Quitter’s Day?
The vision boards have been made, the alarms for your morning routine have been set, and you're heading into 2025 ready to achieve your goals. Alas, you may start to feel the shiny, new energy from January 1st start to fade this week and you're not alone.
"Quitter's Day" is held on the second Friday in January, which marks the fateful day when most people abandon their New Year’s resolutions and start to lose momentum. We've got a few tricks up our sleeves to share to help you make it past Quitter's Day and hold that strong momentum into the new year.
What is Quitter's Day?
January 10th marks this year's Quitter's Day. Research shows that up to 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions have tapped out by the second week of January.
While Quitter's Day may sound negative, it's purpose is actual positive: recognize that you may have fallen off your goals early and try again.
So instead of wallowing in the fact that you accidentally ate sugar or didn't make it to the gym as much as you'd hoped these first two weeks, you can use these steps to keep going for your best year yet.
Step 1: Set Yourself Up for Success
If you haven't already, consider writing down all of your specific goals for the new year. You can start with smaller goals and work your way up to long-term goals.
The key to setting goals is to be realistic. While dreaming big about a remodeled home or climbing Half Dome are great goals, they make sense if you have the budget and time to do so. It's also important to have a mental game plan for these goals to help push through the harder days and not be too hard on ourselves.
Try starting with smaller, achievable goals to help gain confidence and stay motivated. You can start with what you already have, such as cleaning out your home prior to planning remodeling. We have several articles on home organization and cleaning to help you get started.
2. Break Down Big Goals
If you have big goals, try breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps. For example, "30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week" is far more sustainable (and healthy) than “become a gym rat”.
Setting specific goals, such as volunteering four hours a week, can lead to greater success than setting a vague goal of 200 hours per year. Goal setting is crucial to achieving your new year's resolutions.
Step 3: Build a Support System
Having a support system is a huge part of staying on par with your new year's resolutions. You can surround yourself with supportive people who will cheer you on and hold you accountable. Whether it's your family helping you around the house, a gym partner or a budgeting buddy, it always helps to work together on goals.
Step 4: Stay on Track
Is time management a sticking point for your new year's resolutions? We recommend using tools such as online calendars and apps to stay on track for 2025. Seeing a timeline of your goals is a great way to work towards the finish line and feel confident in your goals.
This will also help to identify any time wasters and make room for your goals.
Step 5: Overcome Obstacles
It helps to identify what’s disincentivizing you from sticking to your goal and find a new route to overcome it. For example, going through your closet or garage may seem like an overcomplicated and frustrating goal. Is it the sheer magnitude of going through everything that's stopping you? Try breaking everything down into specific items with set days for cleaning to make the goal more digestible.
You can also use “temptation bundling” to couple something you love with your new habit. This means hitting the gym or being active while tuning in to your favorite podcast. You'll begin to realize that the seemingly lofty goal you set is actually much more attainable and enjoyable when you pair it with something you love.
Most importantly, don't forget to give yourself grace. If you fall off the wagon again with your new year's resolutions, choose a new date to start again.
Step 6: Celebrate Your Success
Last but not least, don't forget to celebrate your achievements! No matter how small or large your new year's resolutions are, you should acknowledge your progress and stay motivated by seeing how far you’ve come.
